I can never forget the last ‘hiss’ of agony that my camcorder gave before it gave up its life for the sake of my naive underwater expeditions. Since then, I have been apprehensive about taking a camera recorder ‘into the blue.’ This may no longer be the case. From what I hear, the Sanyo Xacti CA65 is well equipped and brave enough to accompany me into the sea, with no fear of ‘shorts’.

You might ask me, would it need a bulky housing to protect itself? The answer is no. The Xacti CA65 is as compact as it can get. And not only does it boast of good looks but also of top-notch underwater performance. It can capture 6 MP digital images or record VGA size video at 30 frames per second. Now, that’s incredibly good. The video can either be stored as MPEG-4 AVC or H.264 clips, so that you can show your friends how brave you have been while battling the life-like metal shark.

However, a serious limitation to this is its inability to hold up for more than 60 mins or below 1.5 meters. Now, that seriously impairs my deep diving.

Since this is the only good underwater camcorder available in the market I would not make too much of its $470 price or the need to replace its waterproof seals every year. Excellence always comes at a price.
